New class of low frequency QPOs: signature of nuclear burning or accretion disk instabilities?

چکیده
We report the discovery of a new class of low frequency quasi–periodic variations of the X–ray flux in the X-ray bursters 4U1608-52 and 4U1636-536. We report also the occasional detection of similar QPO in Aql X-1. The QPOs, associated with the flux variations at the level of percents, are observed at the frequency of 7–9 ·10−3 Hz. While usually relative amplitude of flux variations is increasing with energy, the newly discovered QPOs are limited to the softest energies (1–5 keV). The observations of 4U1608-52 suggest that these QPOs are present only when the source luminosity/mass accretion rate is within a rather narrow range and they disappear after Xray bursts. Approximately at the same level of the source luminosity the type I X–ray bursts cease to exist. Judging from these complex of properties we speculate that a special mode of a nuclear burning at the neutron star surface is behind the observed flux variations. Alternatively some instabilities in the accretion disk may be responsible for these QPOs.

Low Frequency Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Low Mass X-ray Binaries and Galactic Black Hole Candidates
We consider the inner regions of accretion disks surrounding black holes and neutron stars and investigate the nonlinear time dependent evolution of thermal-viscous instabilities. The viscous stress is assumed to be proportional to the gas pressure with the viscosity parameter formulated as α = min[α0(h/r) , αmax], where h is the local scale height, r is the distance from the central compact ob...
متن کاملMillihertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations from Marginally Stable Nuclear Burning on an Accreting Neutron Star
We investigate marginally stable nuclear burning on the surface of accreting neutron stars as an explanation for the mHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed from three low mass X-ray binaries. At the boundary between unstable and stable burning, the temperature dependence of the nuclear heating rate and cooling rate almost cancel. The result is an oscillatory mode of burning, with an os...

Periodic outbursts are observed in many AGNs and usually explained with a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) scenario. However, multiple periods are observed in some AGNs and cannot be explained with it. Here we analyze the periodicity of the radio light curves of AO 0235+164 at multi-frequencies and report the discovery of six QPOs in integer ratio 1:2:3:4:5:6 of QPO frequencies, of which ...
متن کاملThe Highest Dynamical Frequency in the Inner Region of an Accretion Disk
ABSTRACT In the inner regions of accretion disks around compact objects, the orbital frequency of the gas deviates from the local Keplerian value. For long-wavelength modes in this region, the radial epicyclic frequency κ is higher than the azimuthal frequency Ω. This has significant implications for models of the twin kHz QPOs observed in many neutron-star sources that traditionally identify t...

In observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer we have discovered quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) near 1 kHz from 4U 1705-44, a low–mass X-ray binary with a neutron star classified as an atoll source. In six separate observations, we detect one QPO with a frequency ranging between 770 and 870 Hz and a 4% rms fraction in the full detector energy band. There is evidence for a second QPO a...
